ide Craftsman's deck project involved designing a multi-level approximate 250 SF deck with an integral pergola and seating. The deck was framed on 6x6 inch vertical timbers set in 24 in deep concrete piers to provide a firm, stable foundation impervious to rising and falling lake levels. 5/4 pressure treated flooring was set over 2x8 inch joists to provide the deck proper. The pergola was designed for both shade as well as a focl point for the deck structure. The pergola was constructed from rough Western red cedar for both character and its beautiful color. The vertical timbers of the pergola are 6x6 inch rough cedar with 2x10 and 2x8 horizontal joists and a 2x2 grid of rough cedar to provide shade.
The underside of the deck was cleared and covered with a 2 inch depth of crushed granite for both aesthetics and to prevent undergrowth.
